In HISTORY, we are learning about migration and immigration. We have been discussing at ‘push and pull factors’ and reading about different ways that people migrate to Australia.

We are starting a project called ‘Migrant Stories’ where students have to put themselves in the position of a person migrating to Australia at a particular time in history. Students need to consider what made their person leave their country and why they chose Australia as their destination. Students need to put together a box of treasured possessions for their person that helps to tell their migration story. The assignment can be found here. We will hold an expo day toward the end of term to share our learning with other classes and our families.

We are reading ‘Refugee’ by Alan Sunderland as an example of an immigration story. This story follows Ali in his escape from the Taliban in Afghanistan and his journey to Australia. This story also explores Ali’s journey after he arrives. We have also looked at the following two videos that tell two different migration stories. The fist of these is an interview with, comedian, Anh Do who tells about his journey from Vietnam in the 1970s. The second video was made by students at Hackham East Primary School for a film competition and includes the story of a family moving to Australia from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
